The Fox Recommends: PJ’s Lager House

pj blog
In the heart of Detroit’s Corktown district lies the beloved but oft overlooked PJs Lager House. Since 1834 Corktown has been home to thousands of Detroit residents. It gained its namesake from the booming population of Irish immigrants that came to America following the Great Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. By the middle of the 19th century they were the largest ethnic group settling in Detroit, and by the mid 1850s over half of the population of the 8th ward (which contained Corktown) were of Irish decent. Many of the Irish settlers were from the County Cork, thus the neighborhood came to be known as Corktown. Over the ensuing 100 years, German, Mexican and Maltese immigrants slowly overtook Corktown as the original Irish settlers dispersed throughout the city, but the name stuck. In 1978 the neighborhood came to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1914 a neighborhood bakery and restaurant was opened at 1254 Michigan Avenue. Serving alcohol under the guise of a furniture store during Prohibition, the Doemer Beer Garden emerged from the upholstery in 1933. In 1965 the restaurant, bakery and bar was bought and renamed The Lager House. Serving city politicians, musicians, unionists and sports fans alike, The Lager House thrived steps from Tigers Stadium. In the 1990s a stage and monster sound system replaced the kitchen as The Lager House became known as one of the best places to see live music and hang out with the band after the show. The White Stripes performed here, as well as Johnny Walker, The Von Bondies and Melvin Davis.

Detroit native PJ Ryder bought the struggling business in October of 2007 and has been a crucial part of the revitalization of the Corktown neighborhood. He brought back the kitchen, serving amazing brunches, po’ boys, jumbo and vegan fare alike. All this while remaining a refuge for local and international acts to rock out in an intimate venue in old Detroit. Make sure to stop by; you’re sure to spot PJ, enjoy some local beer and delicious grub as you rock out to some of the best live music available in the midwest.

The Fox Recommends: Summertime in Tokyo

June 22, 2014 § Leave a comment

With summer comes family vacations, road trips, camping and cabins. The Fox would like to share one of his favorite summer trips, Tokyo. The hum of cicadas is inescapable, as is the heat and humidity. There are occasional misty showers, fashionable teens, and overworked professionals. The many beautiful city parks are welcome repreives from the hot sun, like green oases home to centuries old forests and shrines. Open street markets litter the city’s older districts like Asakusa just as couture names and towering seven story department stores do in Shinjuku and Harajuku. The Tsukiji fish market attracts tourists and Michelin-Star retaurant buyers alike to the auctions held daily at 5 am, while hungry customers sit at 24-hour sushi-go-rounds throughout the city. Tokyo in the summer is an enchanting place, and one The Fox would definitely recommend.

The Fox Drinks: Tom Collins

June 22, 2014 § 2 Comments

Summer has officially arrived and there are few things The Fox loves more than to sit back and enjoy a perfected cocktail on a hot summer evening. The Tom Collins is a classic summer cocktail; refreshing, sweet and dangerously easy drinking. The first Tom Collins recipe was memorialized in 1876 by “the father of American mixology” Jerry Thomas. However drinks historians are hard pressed to agree on the origin of this Collins drink, with some saying the gin punch or John Collins was introduced to New York from London around the 1850s. Gin punches and John Collins had been served for years in popular London social clubs, and many believe that Jerry Thomas calling for Old Tom gin instead of Hollands gin led to the re-naming. Either way, The Fox recommends a delicious Tom Collins to welcome in summer. Below is the original recipe as published in 1876 as well as its modern equivalent.

Jerry Thomas’ 1876 Tom Collins

5 or 6 dashes of gum syrup
Juice of a small lemon
1 large wine glass of Old Tom gin
2 or 3 lumps of ice

Shake all ingredients well and strain into a large bar glass.
Fill the glass with plain soda water and drink while lively.

Tom Collins

3 parts Old Tom gin
2 parts freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 part sugar syrup
4 parts carbonated water to taste

Mix gin, juice and syrup in a Collins glass with ice.
Top up with soda water.
Garnish with a lemon wedge and a maraschino cherry.

The Fox Recommends: The World Cup Too

June 15, 2014 § Leave a comment

The Fox has been not-so-patiently-awaiting the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, was founded over 110 years ago in Zurich. As the governing body of senior men’s national football teams, FIFA is responsible for the organization of football’s major international tournaments, most notably the World Cup. The World Cup has been held every four years since the inaugural 1930 Uruguay World Cup, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 when the World Cup was not held due to the Second World War. The reigning champions in Spain are going to attempt to defend their 2010 title hard won in South Africa over the coming four weeks in Brazil. Thirty two countries will play sixty four games over thirty two days to decide which country will rule the football world for the next four years. Make sure to tune in and enjoy some friendly international competition.
