The Fox Recommends: Everyday Moccasins

October 26, 2014 § 1 Comment

Having walked many miles in his recent travels, The Fox would like to recommend some classic fall and winter gear to keep your feet happy. There are few styles in men’s footwear more enduring then the classic moccasin shoe.

The everyday moccasin was epitomized by Clarks’ Wallabee in the 1960s. This easy wearing, and extremely durable shoe has looked the same since the first pairs were produced over fifty years ago. With the right care these babies will last you decades – all while caring for your tender toes. They are available in six finishes, but The Fox highly recommends the Beeswax Leather.

If you are looking for a vegan option, then look no further then the Adam Brown from Novacas. These are a fantastic animal-friendly alternative with a chukka flair that will keep your feet, you wallet and your heart happy.

The Fox’s Travels: Fall Foraging in NYC

October 26, 2014 § Leave a comment

The best way to any Fox’s heart is through his stomach. Well call him smitten, because The Fox has been snacking, drinking, cheganing and late night binging all over NYC. Here are a few of his favorites from the past week.

First up is Vinnie’s Brooklyn. This pizzeria creates unbelievably (and almost improbably) delicious grub for carnivores, vegans and gluten-free folks at their two Brooklyn locations.  The Fox checked out their Greenpoint location for some vegan chicken drumsticks and a vegan T.Hanks pie – and he will never look at vegan food the same way again. The drumsticks were out of this world, and the pie was gone before it even had a chance to cool. Two thumbs way, way up – make sure you check out this fantastic local pizzeria.

Next is the ice cream parlor formerly known as Lula’s Sweet Apothecary. This East Village gem serves up some of the best all vegan soft serve, hand-packed, flurries, sundaes and floats The Fox has ever had the pleasure of tasting. Flavors include spiced apple cider, chocolate chocolate chip, cake batter and peanut butter fudge. Toppings abound (you can even find vegan marshmallows), and you can find a huge assortment of delicious vegan chocolate bars that benefit local animal shelters. Currently un-named (due to personal disputes), please make sure you check out this absolutely fantastic ice creamery at 516 E 6th Street. You will not be sorry you did.

Finally for those late night cravings, The Fox has found the perfect spot for all you sushi lovers out there. East Kaiten Sushi & Sake Bar is a great spot to grab $16 pitchers of Sapporo, super fresh sushi and a little taste of Tokyo. This sushi bar is actually a sushi-go-round offering up the best sushi The Fox has tasted in ages, with the convenience of the conveyor belt system that takes every plate of sushi past each and every table for easy picking. You can of course order your favorites (to ensure you get some before your neighbors snatch up all of the avocado rolls), and every Friday and Saturday night from 11pm – 3am, all sushi is half off. Let’s review that again – all sushi is half off. Now that you’ve wrapped your scattered-mind around that crazy deal, get over to East Kaiten for a jolly good time.

The Fox Recommends: The Duffle Coat

October 19, 2014 § Leave a comment

duffle

Layering is a fall favorite for The Fox. There’s nothing like layering a great tee or oxford with the right sweater and overcoat. This week The Fox recommends the duffle coat for your autumnal consideration. There is something transportive in this classic coat that makes one think of days gone by. Days spent enjoying a cup of coffee, each other’s company, a good fountain pen, a great cocktail and an even better book.

The duffle coat (or more correctly the duffell Coat) is named for Duffel, Belgium – where the thick woolen fabric these coats (and the first duffle bags) were first made of was produced. The design was popularized in the early 1900s when the British Royal Navy issued a camel-colored duffle coat as “an item of warm clothing” during World War I. This classic design is traditionally made of double weave Duffel, lined in a tartan, has a large, bucket hood, a button-able neck strap, three to four toggle-fastenings, two outside patch pockets and is knee length. And if you’re thinking, this is all just a bit too Wes Anderson-y, you’re right. It is. And there is nothing wrong with that.

As with anything – this classic has seen many modifications, and now one can find the duffle coat in any variety of material, color, length and weight. Below, The Fox has included some of his favorites this fall.

The Fox’s Travels: Dun-Well Doughnuts & Brooklyn

October 19, 2014 § 1 Comment

After only a few days in New York, The Fox has already become befuddled by the endless options for food, entertainment and people watching. This weekend he enjoyed some time in Brooklyn (the hipster’s borough of choice) and indulged in beet burgers and vegan doughnuts. Dun-Well Doughnuts was founded in Brooklyn by longtime friends Christopher Hollowell and Dan Dunbar. The mission at Dun-Well “is to be the premiere vegan doughnut shop on planet Earth and reverently carry on the tradition of doughnut making in a manner that is both innovative and ethical.” Well hats off gentlemen, because you have succeeded. The Fox enjoyed not one or two of these fine pastries, but four. Don’t judge. You try being a vegan doughnut lover presented with choosing the vanilla with chocolate sprinkles, the chocolate glazed, the jelly-filled or the toasted coconut. All were delicious. All were consumed heartily and happily with a cup of Brooklyn Roasting Company’s Mocha Java. The doughnuts are made of a delicate, traditional raised style dough that melts in your mouth. Did we mention that everything is organic? The flavors vary daily and there seems to be no limit to the 200 plus mouthwateringly imaginative varieties that Dun-Well Doughnuts creates.

So raise a mug to The Fox when you check out Dun-Well as there is a good chance he will be camped out in the corner – eating his way into sugared bliss.

The Fox Recommends: Ray-Bans

October 12, 2014 § Leave a comment

glasses1

clas·sic ˈklasik/ adjective 1. judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind. “a classic novel” synonyms: definitive, authoritative, etc.

Perhaps The Fox should have shared this definition last week, when recommending fantastic headphones and flannel for fall. Classic style pieces are often sought, simply for their versatility and ability to stand up to the test of time (not to mention some really awful trends). Today The Fox would like to start a series of recommendations built around classic style icons. As a visually challenged individual, he thought starting with his glasses would be apropos. Eyewear often sets the tone of first introductions, they become a piece of your identity, they help to define and align your personal style and even assist in vision correction.

For some time The Fox has relied on his classic Ray-Ban Black Wayfarers, Tortoise Clubmasters, and gold-framed green-lensed Aviator sunglasses to see him through. These durable and sturdy style icons always look sharp, smart and will go with any ensemble. As an added bonus, each of these models is available with or without prescription, in optics or sunglasses, and available in myriad acrylic color options.

For all you vixens out there, The Fox is highly attracted to ladies wearing the Jackie Ohh II sunglasses. There’s just something so undeniably Audrey Hepburn about these shades.

The Fox’s Travels: New York City

October 12, 2014 § 1 Comment

nyc2
The Fox is going to New York. The Big Apple, NYC, the city that never sleeps – is it ready for The Fox? Is The Fox ready for it? Can you really get donuts delivered at 3am? Are those stories true about the alligators & the subway? These are just some of the provoking questions that have been running through The Fox’s thoughts this past week.

The Fox has also been seriously considering what to do with his time in New York. Visit friends and family, see the UN headquarters, take in a Brooklyn Nets game, spread The Fox’s word and most definitely – Pickle Day 2014. In the coming weeks The Fox will be exploring new corners, eating at different dives and definitely drinking at wayward watering holes.

We will keep you updated.

A Series of Goodbyes: Sad Shoes

October 12, 2014 § Leave a comment

cons blog
The Fox has said many goodbyes as he sets out to (attempt to) relieve his rampant wanderlust. One of the toughest style goodbyes The Fox has ever said was to lay to rest his Converse All-Stars. These Chucks have seen many miles, in several countries around the world, and have officially blown out. Anyone who has ever painstakingly broken in a pair of these classic Chuck Taylor Cons will understand just how tough it is to say goodbye to the perfect, custom fit that only years of wear can achieve.

Cheers to Chucks everywhere.
