First popularized in the 1860s, the Manhattan cocktail has become a mainstay of any bartender’s arsenal. It is a local favorite on the German island of Föhr, and among tourists on the island of Manhattan. No matter where you find yourself today, mixing up a classic Manhattan is a good idea.

Classic Manhattan Cocktail

2 Parts American Whiskey
1 Part Sweet Vermouth
1 to 2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
Orange Peel
Maraschino Cherries

Method: Place ice in a glass. Add the whiskey, vermouth and bitters. Stir gently. Rub the orange peel around the rim of the glass, add 1 to 2 cherries and enjoy.

The Fox has been imbibing various beers, wines, liquors and even coffees this summer. Why stop now? Just recently The Fox has been kicking back, reminiscing and enjoying one of Detroit’s finest brews while watching the summer storm by. The Motor City Brewing Works Ghettoblaster is an excellent English style mild ale, described as having a clean biscuit flavor, you will definitely enjoy a summer evening a little more with one of these in your paw.

Motor City Brewing Works has been producing some of the world’s best hand-crafted beer since 1994. All of their beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized for maximum freshness and effect (wink). With fifteen beers, a hard cider, four wines and six sodas all brewed onsite at their Canfield brewery, MCBW has something for drinkers of all tastes and ages. Some mornings call for several cups of coffee. If you find yourself reaching for that extra shot of joe this fine Sunday, make sure it’s the good stuff. The Fox loves to journey down to Midtown Detroit for an excellent pour of Great Lakes Coffee. Here, at the first of now three metro area locations, coffee enthusiasts can get lost in a host of delicious lattes, draught iced coffees, espresso shots and pour over brewed coffees. In addition to testing some of their small-batch roasts they source from independent farmers, co-ops and more – one can enjoy a delicious draught pull of several locally brewed, Michigan beers. Right next to the iced coffee, you will find selections from Jolly Pumpkin, Shorts, Bell’s, Petrus and Dupont on tap. There is a regularly rotating menu of natural wines, small plates and goodies to satiate any hunger pang to come your way.

Check out this awesome company today, and make sure to hit up one of their Coffee Bars in Detroit, Bloomfield or Lake Orion.

The Fox Drinks Great Lakes Coffee and is better for it.

The Fox Drinks: Perrin Grapefruit IPA

A couple of Foxheads were recently spotted enjoying a pitcher of beer and a mean looking Sgt. Pepperoni’s vegan pizza at the Majestic Garden Bowl in Detroit. They looked happy, and a tad shy about having their photo taken, but when asked about what they were drinking – they opened up.

“It’s delicious!” exclaimed one, “It’s grapefruit beer!” exclaimed the other. When The Fox heard this, he had to try some. The bar keep pulled a tall glass of Perrin Brewing Company’s Grapefruit IPA, The Fox tentatively sniffed the brew, and dove in. He will never look at IPAs the same way again. If you have a chance, we highly recommend hitting up the Garden BowlSgt. Pepperoni’s and a tall glass of Perrin’s Grapefruit IPA.

Cheers!

The Fox Drinks: Tom Collins

Summer has officially arrived and there are few things The Fox loves more than to sit back and enjoy a perfected cocktail on a hot summer evening. The Tom Collins is a classic summer cocktail; refreshing, sweet and dangerously easy drinking. The first Tom Collins recipe was memorialized in 1876 by “the father of American mixology” Jerry Thomas. However drinks historians are hard pressed to agree on the origin of this Collins drink, with some saying the gin punch or John Collins was introduced to New York from London around the 1850s. Gin punches and John Collins had been served for years in popular London social clubs, and many believe that Jerry Thomas calling for Old Tom gin instead of Hollands gin led to the re-naming. Either way, The Fox recommends a delicious Tom Collins to welcome in summer. Below is the original recipe as published in 1876 as well as its modern equivalent.

Jerry Thomas’ 1876 Tom Collins

5 or 6 dashes of gum syrup
Juice of a small lemon
1 large wine glass of Old Tom gin
2 or 3 lumps of ice

Shake all ingredients well and strain into a large bar glass.
Fill the glass with plain soda water and drink while lively.

Tom Collins

3 parts Old Tom gin
2 parts freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 part sugar syrup
4 parts carbonated water to taste

Mix gin, juice and syrup in a Collins glass with ice.
Top up with soda water.
Garnish with a lemon wedge and a maraschino cherry.
