The Fox’s Travels: Dun-Well Doughnuts & Brooklyn

After only a few days in New York, The Fox has already become befuddled by the endless options for food, entertainment and people watching. This weekend he enjoyed some time in Brooklyn (the hipster’s borough of choice) and indulged in beet burgers and vegan doughnuts. Dun-Well Doughnuts was founded in Brooklyn by longtime friends Christopher Hollowell and Dan Dunbar. The mission at Dun-Well “is to be the premiere vegan doughnut shop on planet Earth and reverently carry on the tradition of doughnut making in a manner that is both innovative and ethical.” Well hats off gentlemen, because you have succeeded. The Fox enjoyed not one or two of these fine pastries, but four. Don’t judge. You try being a vegan doughnut lover presented with choosing the vanilla with chocolate sprinkles, the chocolate glazed, the jelly-filled or the toasted coconut. All were delicious. All were consumed heartily and happily with a cup of Brooklyn Roasting Company’s Mocha Java. The doughnuts are made of a delicate, traditional raised style dough that melts in your mouth. Did we mention that everything is organic? The flavors vary daily and there seems to be no limit to the 200 plus mouthwateringly imaginative varieties that Dun-Well Doughnuts creates.

So raise a mug to The Fox when you check out Dun-Well as there is a good chance he will be camped out in the corner – eating his way into sugared bliss.

The Fox Recommends: Ray-Bans

clas·sic ˈklasik/ adjective 1. judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind. “a classic novel” synonyms: definitive, authoritative, etc.

Perhaps The Fox should have shared this definition last week, when recommending fantastic headphones and flannel for fall. Classic style pieces are often sought, simply for their versatility and ability to stand up to the test of time (not to mention some really awful trends). Today The Fox would like to start a series of recommendations built around classic style icons. As a visually challenged individual, he thought starting with his glasses would be apropos. Eyewear often sets the tone of first introductions, they become a piece of your identity, they help to define and align your personal style and even assist in vision correction.

For some time The Fox has relied on his classic Ray-Ban Black Wayfarers, Tortoise Clubmasters, and gold-framed green-lensed Aviator sunglasses to see him through. These durable and sturdy style icons always look sharp, smart and will go with any ensemble. As an added bonus, each of these models is available with or without prescription, in optics or sunglasses, and available in myriad acrylic color options.

For all you vixens out there, The Fox is highly attracted to ladies wearing the Jackie Ohh II sunglasses. There’s just something so undeniably Audrey Hepburn about these shades.

The Fox’s Travels: New York City

October 12, 2014 § 1 Comment

The Fox is going to New York. The Big Apple, NYC, the city that never sleeps – is it ready for The Fox? Is The Fox ready for it? Can you really get donuts delivered at 3am? Are those stories true about the alligators & the subway? These are just some of the provoking questions that have been running through The Fox’s thoughts this past week.

The Fox has also been seriously considering what to do with his time in New York. Visit friends and family, see the UN headquarters, take in a Brooklyn Nets game, spread The Fox’s word and most definitely – Pickle Day 2014. In the coming weeks The Fox will be exploring new corners, eating at different dives and definitely drinking at wayward watering holes.

We will keep you updated.

A Series of Goodbyes: Sad Shoes

The Fox has said many goodbyes as he sets out to (attempt to) relieve his rampant wanderlust. One of the toughest style goodbyes The Fox has ever said was to lay to rest his Converse All-Stars. These Chucks have seen many miles, in several countries around the world, and have officially blown out. Anyone who has ever painstakingly broken in a pair of these classic Chuck Taylor Cons will understand just how tough it is to say goodbye to the perfect, custom fit that only years of wear can achieve.

Cheers to Chucks everywhere.

The Fox Recommends: Flannel

This past week has proved to be a chilly one. Fall is officially here, and with the cold starts and foggy mornings, The Fox has reached for some of his favorite layering flannels.

The oldest records of a flannel-like woven fabric dates to Wales in the 16th century. Originally made of wool, flannel is now available in a myriad of materials. Much like a basic white oxford and a pair of classic dark-washed jeans, the flannel is a go-to workhorse item in your closet. Layered over your favorite Fox tee, and under a nice light jacket, a versatile flannel will happily carry you through the rest of autumn and into winter. Below The Fox has chosen some of his favorites to share and recommend. Cheers to those chilly mornings.

The Fox Recommends: BeyerDynamic Custom One Pros

Sometimes you just need a few minutes to yourself. A precious few minutes in which you can collect your thoughts, re-organize the chaos that your day is and just enjoy a slice of life in solitude. Whether commuting on a noisy train, cooking in a noisy home or trying to quiet your noisy thoughts – a few minutes of great music, or a classic audiobook, can really make a huge difference in relaxing your mind and body. The Fox has searched high and low for the perfect pair of headphones to aid his precious few minutes of quiet thought.

Audiophiles the world round will argue which audio brand is the best, open-backed vs closed-backed, in-line accessories and the optimum ohms for on-the-go listening. At the end of the day, you really just need to go with what sounds best to your own ears, and what look best suits your own style. For The Fox, the BeyerDynamic Custom One Pros fit the bill.

These BeyerDynamic headphones offer fantastic, clear sound with rich, full bass and even a customizable sound slider that changes the sound to what you need at the moment. The Custom One Pros run at a lower 16 ohms – which means these bad boys don’t need the crazy amount of power that typical studio headphones need to give you such substantial sound – so you can listen to your favorite tunes on your phone or mp3 player with the same sound quality you would get listening off your living room receiver. These headphones are easily updated to match your current fashion tastes as well – with endless color options for the covers, rings, head and ear bands. Definitely worth a listen, the BeyerDynamic Custom One Pros are a great pair of headphones.

The Fox’s Finery: Travel Accessories

September 28, 2014 § Leave a comment

0000
Travel can be an equally exciting and disquieting prospect. Once your travel plans are in place, you make your packing list and then you check it twice. As you depart you worry whether your suit will need pressing, whether your laptop will be safely stow-able, if your drawing supplies will remain organized and if you forgot your ticket or passport – or both. Many of the most common travel concerns can be addressed with the right amount of organization. Whether journeying overseas, across state lines or locally – The Fox has found several fine items that are utterly indispensable in the quest for perfect travel orchestration.

The Carry All Organizer

When pondering what to pack it is very easy to forget a pair of socks, a tube of toothpaste, a comb and even your passport. The advent of e-tickets and self-help kiosks at the airport have eliminated some ticket concerns, but what about that football match you plan to see, the off-Broadway play, the super cheap theme park tickets you scored? If you have ever shown up at the airport confident that you have every paste, fluid and cream you could ever need – then come to find out you’ve forgotten the one thing you can’t buy at the corner drugstore – you’ll know why The Fox has listed a fine carry all as essential.

There are many passport covers, ugly plastic accordion-style office thingies and flesh colored cash carriers out there. However, The Fox is predisposed to accessories with a little more style and panache then hoisting your shirt up in the middle of a security line to grab your identification. That being said, The Fox has searched high and low for a travel organizer that is stylish, discrete and unique. The search yielded few results. So The Fox took to crafting his own utilizing an old book, some adhesive-backed felt, craft paper and magnetic snaps. The result, as shown below, happily holds passports, international driver’s permits, tickets, cash and more. All while discretely fitting inside your carry-on next to the latest paperback you can’t leave home without. Fort Knox it is not – but this little organizer adds some elegance to your travel management needs.

The Messenger

He’s a business man, not a businessman. The Fox is a huge fan of grabbing the laptop or the tablet, the sketchpad and pencils and heading to a favorite coffee stop for some brainstorming. He is also fond of knowing that everything he needs for longer travel is safely right at his fingertips, can be secured cross-body-style and easily stowed for take off. Whether checking in for a red-eye or throwing your bag haphazardly into the car for a quick meeting at the office, the right messenger bag, briefcase, attaché or laptop bag can make all the difference in protecting your finest gear.

The Fox recently purchased the Herschel Supply Company’s Clark messenger in the Sunday print, and couldn’t be happier. It is a sturdy, well-built bag with enough room to house a 15″ laptop, some drawing gear, your fountain pen & notebook, that ever-important organizer and headphones. With a removable shoulder strap, a padded laptop sleeve, interior pockets to keep things in their place and heavy metal hardware – The Fox is convinced the Clark messenger is the perfect bag for all of your travel needs.

The Weekender Bag

The suitcase – dun dun duuunnn – can offer much vexation whilst packing. A big open space (with way too much room for shorter trips) can be daunting. And The Fox finds he is just encouraged to over pack when presented with so much space anyway – so why not cut the size of the bag? Aha! The weekender. The perfect sized bag for trips lasting up to a week. And the key to packing for longer trips is to roll your unmentionables, casual pants and tees. For fewer wrinkles try the ever-excellent Japanese folding method – it works wonders.

The Fox is currently using the cheap and easy American Apparel Nylon Pack Cloth Duffle. It holds a huge amount of clothes, a dopp kit et al – and stores flat when not in use. If you are looking for something with a little more structure, try the Tin Cloth Duffle by Filson, or the Artigan vegan leather bag by Matt & Nat. All of these excellent choices are sure to make your packing simpler, and your travel a little more refined.

The Fox hopes you have enjoyed his focus on the finer things this month. Happy Fall and stay tuned for more from The Fox.
